Match Report

Bangladesh kicked off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Hong Kong at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, with captain Litton Das leading from the front with a brilliant 59 off 39 balls.

First Innings: Hong Kong Fight Back

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Bangladesh’s pace attack struck early. Tanzim Hasan Sakib set the tone after Bangladesh opted to bowl. Bowling in the early 140kmph range, he first produced a late-swinging delivery that snuck past Babar Hayat’s defensive push and hit the stumps, before dismissing Zeeshan with a rising ball that caught the splice and looped to cover.

Hong Kong found themselves struggling at 30/2 before Zeeshan Ali (30 off 34 balls) and Nizakat Khan (42 off 40 balls) steadied the innings with crucial contributions. The highlight of Hong Kong’s innings came through captain Yasim Murtaza’s explosive cameo of 28 off just 19 balls, which included 2 fours and a six.

Murtaza looked briefly like the man who could change the momentum as he blazed to a 19-ball 28, but he was run-out after a miscommunication with Nizakat. This run-out proved costly as Hong Kong managed only 143/7 in their 20 overs.

Rishad Hossain was particularly effective in the death overs, picking up 2 wickets in the 19th over to restrict Hong Kong’s late surge.

Second Innings: Litton Das Leads the Chase

Bangladesh’s chase began with a glimpse of their new hitting intent. Parvez Hossain Emon raced to 19 off 13 before miscuing a slower delivery from Ayush Shukla to deep midwicket in the third over.

After losing both openers for 47/2, the match turned in Bangladesh’s favor through a magnificent 95-run partnership between Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy. The duo demonstrated excellent running between the wickets, with the pair running 11 twos, while Bangladesh’s total of 16 twos was their second-highest in a T20I.

Litton Das anchored the chase perfectly, initially playing cautiously before accelerating in the latter half of his innings. Litton shifted gears in the 13th over with two fours against Shukla, lifting his strike rate from the low 100s to finish at 151.28.

His knock of 59 off 39 balls (6 fours, 1 six) not only secured victory but also saw him break the record for the most sixes by a Bangladeshi in T20Is, hitting 78 sixes to surpass Mahmudullah’s previous record of 77.

Towhid Hridoy remained unbeaten on 35 off 36 balls, providing the perfect foil to his captain’s aggressive approach.

Post-Match Reactions

Litton Das (Player of the Match): “Very important to win the first game. Last couple of series, we have played good cricket. But in Asia Cup, little bit of pressure comes automatically. We played well today. We could have finished the game earlier but we stuck to the demands of the situation. Our mentality is to always win.”

Yasim Murtaza (Hong Kong captain): “I am happy with the way our batters scored. But I will be happier if we got 160-170 plus – that would be a different total. Once we go back, we know which area we need to work on and hopefully we do better next time.”

Tournament Implications

With this victory, Bangladesh earned their first two points in Group B and recorded a net run rate of +1.001. The win puts them in strong contention for the Super Fours stage, while Hong Kong’s hopes of progressing have been effectively ended following losses in both their group matches.

Bangladesh will look to build on this momentum as they continue their Asia Cup campaign, while Hong Kong will be seeking to end their tournament on a positive note in their remaining fixtures.

What’s Next?

Bangladesh’s next challenge will be against Sri Lanka in their upcoming Group B encounter, where a victory would virtually guarantee their passage to the Super Fours stage of the tournament.
